Backwards Down the Number Line by Phish [The Daily Vinyl music video #29]

July 112010

The Daily Vinyl video #29: “Backwards Down the Number Line” by Phish video. This was filmed in one take (as they usually are) and with very little set-up… or thought as to whether turntables can float. The mermaid was the closest thing I could find to a fish. I would’ve liked to have purchased some real ones for this video, but I really wanted to get this on YouTube the same day of its release. (The LP release of Phish’s 14th studio album “Joy” on 180 gram vinyl was Oct 6, 2009.)

If you dig this, please visit http://www.TheDailyVinyl.com to view other videos, especially those with audio tracks not allowed on YouTube. Also, for your convenience, I have provided links to purchase the featured music, (help support TheDailyVinyl). Did you know that “The Dude” wants to hear about YOUR music memories. Happy Moog – The Four Best Songs from THE HAPPY MOOG!

June 282010

After the success of Walter (now Wendy) Carlos’s 1968 album SWITCHED-ON BACH, the record industry experienced a brief surge of cash-in moog exploitation albums. Some of the best of these include The Moog Machine’s SWITCHED-ON ROCK (Columbia Records), The Electric Concept Orchestra’s MOOG GROOVE (Limelight Records), and THE HAPPY MOOG! (Pickwick Records).

THE HAPPY MOOG! was masterminded by Jean Jacques Perrey and Harry Breuer, both stalwarts of the music industry. Perrey in particular is remembered as an early pioneer of electronica; he’s best known for his 1970 album MOOG INDIGO as well as for his collaborations with Gershon Kingsley.

Here are the best tracks from the Happy Moog album:

1) “Space Express”
2) “Short Circuit”
3) “Paris 2079″
4) “Saturn Ski Jump”

I found my copy of the album at a Goodwill store in Massillon, Ohio. It was fifty cents.

How to Make a Record – Vinyl – Studio One

June 102010

Studio One is one of Jamaica’s most renowned record labels and recording studios, having been described as “the Motown of Jamaica.”

Studio One was involved with most of the major music movements in Jamaica during the 1960s and 1970s, including ska, rocksteady, reggae, dub and dancehall. The label was founded by Clement “Coxsone” Dodd in 1954, and the first recordings were cut in 1957 on Brentford Road in Kingston. Amongst its earliest records were “Easy Snappin’” by Theophilus Beckford, backed by Clue J and his Blues Blasters, and “This Man is Back” by trombonist Don Drummond. Dodd had previously issued music on a series of other labels, including World Disc, and had run Sir Coxsone the Downbeat, one of the largest and most reputable sound systems in the Kingston ghettos. The label and studio were closed when Dodd relocated to New York City in the 1980s.

Studio One has recorded and released music by (and had a large hand in shaping the careers of) artists such as The Skatalites, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Burning Spear, Toots & the Maytals, John Holt, Horace Andy, Ken Boothe, Freddie McGregor, Dennis Brown, Jackie Mittoo, Gladiators, Michigan & Smiley, Wailing Souls, Dillinger, Delroy Wilson, Heptones, Johnny Osbourne, Marcia Griffiths (of the I-Threes), Sugar Minott, The Abyssinians, Culture, Soul Vendors, Lone Ranger, and Alton Ellis. Noted rival Prince Buster began his career working for Dodd’s sound system, and the record producer Harry J recorded many of his best-known releases at Studio One.
