I would like to put music from my vinyl records onto my computer so as to download to my IPOD; is this possible without expensive software & cables?
All you need is a turntable, receiver, computer and software. The article below will help get you started.

It is possible.
The best bet is using software and cables.
You will need a USB turntable, change the tracks into MP3’s on your computer, and then upload them to your ipod.
The only issue with this is the cost – Amazon has USB turntables going for about $75. You will probably get one cheaper by shopping around.
Now the less tech way. Your computer may have an audio recorder. If not, you can pull one down easily from the web. Note: the quality will be not great to say the least. Then position your speakers near your computer mic and start playing around. But keep quiet!!!!!

You simply need an inexpensive patch cable that will take the signal output from the turntable and run it through the input on your computer’s soundcard. Other than that, you would just need something to record the input and there are lots of free programs out there, even a plugin for WinAmp which would work.
Depending on the turntable, you probably just need a <$5 cable with RCA at one end (RCA are the normal red and white connectors with the post in the middle of a collar, like you’d use for connecting a stereo, for example) and 1/8 inch "headphone" jack (male) at the other. See http://www.mycablemart.com/store/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=1630
The RCA end is most likely to be the kind you need for your turntable’s output, but you should double-check before buying anything. Your computer will almost certainly have an audio input jack right near the headphone jack in the back of the tower (if it’s a laptop, you may not have one, but you should).
As for the recording software, I’m sure you must be using Windows or Mac, so you’d likely be able to record with a default system recorder, but that would usually be recording it in a poor format like WAV. Better would be to Google for the software you want and be sure it will record the "line in" input. Don’t forget to include the words "Free software" in your search terms. If the recording software makes the file a format you can’t use on your mobile device, you may also need to get a free audio converter/encoder.
From doing this myself, I can tell you that I found Winamp’s plugins to be perfectly useful in this task and now they even have built-in mobile device management, so it’s possible you can get everything handled in one application. I know, it seems complicated right now, but really, once you get your head around it, it won’t be hard — it’s actually pretty easy
Best luck to you.
