what is the difference between an indie type of music record label and a major type of record label?

Indie labels give the artists a lot more creative freedoms and usually sign bands regardless of the likelihood that they will have huge mass appeal. They fill a niche market…and they kind of set the standard of quality in my opinion.
Major labels are driven by the trends in the (usually young) market and bands are signed accordingly.
Indie labels vs major labels is kind of like the difference between Walmart and a downtown boutique in terms of quality of product…the difference is in the cost per item. Where you would expect a boutique teeshirt to be way more expensive than a Hanes teeshirt, you will expect the price of a CD on either label to be much the same. The way they do this is that they are running smaller companies with less overhead, artists often agree to make less money and tour instead, and execs aren’t living so fat either.
