What does undergraduate mean and the best course I should take to start a record label ?

February 232010

I want to start a hip-hop music record label and I only have the choice right now of undergraduate courses, should I take like business class or what do I need? Im lost

Undergraduate means that you are at the basic level of post secondary education. You have graduated high school but need basic core courses and courses for your major before you can go on to graduate or professional school (medical school or law) at the masters or PhD levels.

Fortunately, there are music business and performing arts management degrees at certain colleges you can take, but usually you must be proficient in music in order to be considered for the program. These majors include business courses and economics, stats, etc. Here is a site that lists some universities that offer music business as a degree: http://www.allartschools.com/find/XX/music-business-degree-programs/?src=trl_aas

If you do a search online, you should be able to find more information. I found this at ehow: http://www.ehow.com/how_2049933_start-record-label.html?ref=fuel

You’re going to have to do some research online yourself or in the library. Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble also have books specifically on the subject.

Some people major in whatever they want in college, but also intern at a record label. The best places for hip-hop are new york or LA but you have to be an undergrad usually to get these internships.

There are also postings for seminars on how to start a record label. Check online for these or the ads in the back of music magazines like Vibe and also the Learning Annex.

Good luck!

Undergraduate means you are in your first 4 years of college – you have not yet received your bachelor’s degree.

At Syracuse University, there is a undergraduate program design specifically for those who are interested in the music industry, on the production side. Maybe you should check it out. It combines music with business.
