What do I need to buy to record music on my Mac laptop?

February 232010

I want to buy whatever it is I need to buy so my husband can record music at home on our computer. The problem is, it’s a surprise so I can’t ask him what he needs. He used to record a lot, but he no longer has an amp or p.a. or anything. We have a mac laptop that’s about a year old. we have garage band. he has a microphone. i looked on the apple store site, and they had some usb interface things, and a friend told me to get an imic and a pre-amp and stuff, but I’m still confused and don’t really know what I’m looking for. I imagine he would mostly just want to record acoustic guitar and vocals to start, possibly keyboard and a drum machine in the future. So what do I need to buy to get him started? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

It sounds generally like he has got everything he’d need really – Garage Band does everythign you could want and more.

I’d get him a USB Midi Keyboard – any music store will have one and it’s fantastic for Garage Band.

If he’s not got one a USB Mic may be good and the iGriffin is good as an adapter for inputting a number of things – like a guitar if it has no direct USB cable.

Your husband would need a Mac compatible mixing console and some good recording software such as Logic Express.

Ion makes some reasonably priced ISB plug and play turntables so you do not need the preamp.

Amazon sells them for under $150. It includes software.
Otherwise you will need some type of preamp and phonograph. The all in one is easier.
As for cassettes most do not need preamps but you will need software .
There is freeware and shareware available.
