Yes, they will last …
Yes, they will last longer than any cd or dvd. Especially if they are taken care of. Even if they are scratched, it’s nowhere near as annoying as listening to a skipping cd.

Can’t the …
Can’t the Smithsonian or the Library of Congress purchase it? I mean, I know we’re in a really bad economy and all but we cannot lose our history either, and these records are part of our history.

Im sure there is a rock star or some celebrity that would easily pay 3 million just to say they have the largest record collection in the world! Or a big producer like Timbaland or Dr, Dre!

The bulk of this …
The bulk of this collection is most likely worthless. Just because it’s old doesn’t mean it’s worth anything. He needs to part out the valuable stuff and take the loss on the rest. If not, he will die and these records will go for pennies on the dollar.

do these records last longer than CDs today? CDs, DVDs, and types of compact discs are terrible storage devices. All my movies have fuzzy interruptions only after a few times of use.

Incredible clarity …
Incredible clarity of picture! I’ve a mere 4,700 records, tapes and disks, but as a collector, can identify with you.
Gawdnose what’ll happen to my collection when I go (I’m 57 right now). But I’m slowly putting some of the gems up on YouTube (and trying to dodge YouTube’s arbitrary “strikes” as I go).
ONE quibble – 1881? I also have an Emil Berliner disc – but it says “Patented Nov. 8. 1887″ (my particular one – Souza’s “Love Me Little Love Me Long” by Miss. Alice Raymond is dated 1895).
