Please suggest a good vinyl jazz or classical music recording for me?

May 12010

I’m just getting back into vinyl and would like a suggestion for my first great listening album to purchase. I enjoy all music and would love some jazz or classical recordings for my listening pleasure. My first purchase was the new U2 album on vinyl which is fine, but I’d like to start expanding the collection.

The Doors, Blondie, David Bowie.

Vinyl Junkies Part 1

Some record store owners will not give up vinyl records despite the fact that downloading is overtaking all other music formats. This is Part I of a three-part series of videos.

is it legal to sample music from a vinyl record you bought?

April 302010

is sampling not considered plagiarism when you sample from a vinyl recor? is it legal?..

Yes and no… copyrights typically prevent you from reproducing the material in whole or in part… which means no sampling. The courts have defended the rights of the users to make backup copies of music as well as convert formats.

If you sample music to make a new song, you have to get permission (either before or after) from the owner of the music you sampled. Sometimes (usually) they will require you pay royalties.

If you are just messing around and not making a profit or playing your samples to the public, nobody is going to care. If you are turning a profit from their intellectual property, they will come after you.

How the heck did a vinyl record contain music (it is just a piece of plastic)?

April 272010

I don’t get it.

The question is how the vinyl record was made?
There are two ways you can convert electrical to mechanical impulses, and vice versa, electrodynamic, and piezoelectric transducers, and both were used in phonographs.
During a recording, sound is picked up by the microphone, amplified, and given to the pickup.
The vibrations in the pickup create grooves on the "soft" record, with the depth of the grooves being proportional to the intensity of the sound. Then a mold is made of that soft record, and the vinyl record is mass produced by stamping.
During playback, the vibrations in the pickup are converted to electrical impulses, amplified and sent to the speakers :)

Wilco (The Song) by Wilco [The Daily Vinyl music video #13]

April 272010

The Daily Vinyl video #13: “Wilco (The Song)” by Wilco. This song comes from their recently released album “Wilco”. A week after its release I purchased this on 180 gram vinyl from the neighborhood record store (The Groove at 5-points in East Nashville).

The vinyl record includes the CD too. The 180 gram vinyl sounds amazing! Visit www.TheDailyVinyl.com for more information and to check out my video for Wilco’s song “Either Way” from Sky Blue Sky, visit http://thedailyvinyl.com/blog/2009/10/the-daily-vinyl-video-12-either-way-by-wilco/

anyone know a machine that will play old vinyl records-LPs, and burn the music to a CD?

April 252010

Check C.Crane.com or Crosley. I know they both have USB turntables and CD recorders. Which one depends on whether you want to go right to disc or if you want to put the files on the computer.

Why would some of xtreme music collectors and fans buy vinyl records instead of Cds??

April 192010

I’ve been wondering why??

All the music fans and who’s aware of collecting most of the music they like buy records not cds??

Presumably, because well made (and well cared for) vinyl has much better sound quality, deeper, richer, warmer, fuller, rounder, more luxurious sound than early digital recordings. Don’t know if it’s still true with remasters. Check out the digital v. analog debate on any audiophile site.
