What sort of job can I get as a Marketing major and a Music Industry Minor?

April 302010

I am currently attending James Madison University and I am curious as to what type of jobs will suit me with what I am studying. Can someone give me some specific job titles? I’m trying to get an answer more specific than something like "work in marketing for a record label." Can someone help me out please?

you could be a music teacher maybe

What do I put as my major if I want to start my own record label or do something else in the music industry?

April 272010

I always get somewhat confused in that department. If you can, I also would like to know some schools good for the music industry. So far all I know is Full Sail University, but I love it so, I haven’t been looking much.

Indiana University has a Recording Arts program but it is very competitive.

Claude Vonstroke – Big N Round (Maetrik Remix)

Claude Vonstroke – Big N Round (Maetrik Remix)

What started as a fake name and small booking at a friends birthday party has spiraled into an international DJ career for Claude VonStroke (aka Barclay Crenshaw.) One night in San Francisco after a long night of partying, Barclay and his friends began to make up fake European DJ names. Just kidding around, Barclay came up with Claude VonStroke. It ended up sticking after someone at the party booked him to DJ and used the new moniker on the flyer.
Raised in the suburbs Detroit, Barclay Crenshaw fell in love with the beat by listening to popular broadcasts of the Electrifying Mojos Midnight Funk Association on local radio. At age 16, after mastering the small 4-track recorder used at his high school, Barclay and good friend Jamie Osborne looked through the phone book and visited Juan Atkins fledgling Metroplex recordings. They tried unsuccessfully to convince Atkins to hire them as sound engineers and music producers. Little did they know, Mr. Atkins would soon go on to become the godfather of techno.

After University in New York and a 4 diversion in Hollywood working as an assistant on a series of big budget feature films, Barclay moved back to Detroit and re-discovered his passion for electronic music. He was initially inspired by listening to drum n bass mix tapes from the UK. He built a massive live rig of synthesizers and samplers and played live at local Poor Boy underground warehouse parties until he lost all of his music in an electrical outage.

One year later, Barclay re-located to San Francisco and decided to merge his passion for music and film by releasing Intellect, a six hour DVD package, self-directed and produced, covering the worldwide electronic music scene and including interviews with over 35 top producers and legendary DJs such as Derrick May, Swayzak, Derrick Carter, Dubfire, and Theo Parrish. The main goal of the Intellect project was to make an informative DVD that could help DJs advance their careers in electronic music. The result was Crenshaw taking lessons from his own DVD by starting a record label called dirtybird and a production career under the name Claude VonStroke.
Since 2005, dirtybird has carved out a niche as a premiere American tech funk label and has released over 20 EPs. Claude VonStrokes very first record, Deep Throat, was a major hit of 2005. The success of the single was followed up by Whos Afraid of Detroit?, another international hit championed by Richie Hawtin who called it the best track of 2006 in DJ magazine. Soon after that Claude released his full-length debut album, Beware of the Bird to outstanding reviews, further establishing him as an original talent in the underground. Since then, he has recorded over 25 remixes for a range of commercial and underground artists from Indy rock group The Rapture to Detroit techno legend Kevin Saunderson.
In an effort to give something back to the community Claude unveiled a deeper techno label called mothership in 2007. A large percentage of the labels proceeds go to a music school for children in Claudes hometown of Detroit, Michigan. This label features a more euro flavor featuring groups like Catz n Dogz, Italoboyz Maetrik and Voodeux.
Claude has also headlined almost every major club, festival and basement after-party in the world from Fabric to Panorama Bar to DEdge. The outdoor dirtybird parties in San Franciscos scenic Golden Gate Park have also become a legendary summer destination point for both locals and international travelers. A VonStroke DJ set is based on meticulous track selection and outrageous risk taking. He always takes time to find the special ass-wiggling cuts that keep the dance-floor percolating.
In 2009, Claude is very excited to be mixing Fabric 46. He will also return to the studio and release his 2nd artist album.

Music Majors! Describe for the record your daily stresses that you go through?

April 252010

I am a music student and I understand the daily stress that music majors experience everyday, but other people have no idea.

Being a Music Major is the most stressful of all majors! At a university, most students start their field classes about the 3rd year. Music students start immediately upon arrival! Aside from taking semi-useless classes such as Biotechnology (what does this have to do with music?) and doing homework for all of those classes, we have to practice. It takes most students 2 years to finish general education credits, it takes a music major 4 years minimum! Not to mention all of the 1 credit classes that require 3-5 credits worth of work and time! Then if you’re in education, you have to get in and jump through the hoops of the education department at the same time as jumping through all the hoops of the music department. Then if the departments don’t get along…you’re in for an even rockier ride! Somehow, I made it through.

POISON – Nothin’ but a good time

April 242010

Posiblemente el mejor video de una de las mejores bandas de Rock de la historia.
Bobby Dall – Bass
C.C. DeVille – Lead Guitar, Vocals
Bret Michaels – Lead Vocals, Guitar
Rikki Rocket – Drums
—–
In late 1982, an ad in the local newspaper prompted guitarist Matt Smith to join singer Bret Michaels, drummer Rikki Rockett (the two met one day when Rikki, a hairdresser, came to Bret’s house to cut his sister’s hair) and bassist Bobby Dall. After writing several songs and playing local shows, they changed their name from Paris to Poison.

In March of 1984, the unsigned band moved from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to Los Angeles, California in hopes of making it big. Guitarist Matt Smith decided to leave the band, but he agreed to help find a new guitarist. After over a hundred applicants, the band chose C.C. DeVille (over Slash, of Guns N Roses fame, interestingly enough), and the current lineup was born.

Interestingly, their real names are: Bret Michael Sychak (Bret Michaels), Alan Ream (Rikki Rockett), Bruce Anthony Johannesson (C.C. DeVille), and Harry Kuykendall (Bobby Dall).

After playing LA clubs for a few years, the band was finally signed by Enigma Records, where they recorded their debut album, Look What the Cat Dragged In, in only 12 days for only $23,000. To almost everyone’s surprise, the record spawned 3 top 10 hits; I Want Action, Talk Dirty to Me, and I Won’t Forget You.

After touring with bands like Cinderella and Ratt and selling over 2 million copies of their album, the band went back to LA to record their follow-up smash hit, Open Up and Say… Ahh! This album outsold the first by millions, selling 5 million in the US alone. Hits off this album included Every Rose Has Its Thorn, Fallen Angel, Nothing But a Good Time, and the cover tune, Your Mama Don’t Dance. After a tour which included former Van Halen lead singer David Lee Roth, the band went back to record their third album.

In July of 1990, Poison released Flesh & Blood. Hits included the energetic Unskinny Bop, the sentimental Something To Believe In, the rockin’ Ride the Wind, and the slow tune Life Goes On. After a worldwide tour which was recorded, the band released their fourth album, Swallow This Live. This two CD set included all their major hits live plus 4 new studio tracks.

Unfortunately, after the release of Swallow This Live, guitarist C.C. DeVille was fired from the band. He has since revealed that the reason for his departure was a drug and alcohol problem which he has since overcome. To replace C.C. at guitar, however, the band hired guitar whiz Richie Kotzen. The result was an excellent bluesy album called Native Tongue. Despite the amazing music on this disc, it didn’t do well commercially because of the drastic change in image and sound. Soon after the tour to support Native Tongue, Richie Kotzen was fired from the band due to personal conflicts.

The next guitarist to fill C.C.’s shoes was another guitar whiz, Blues Saracino. With Blues, Poison recorded another excellent disc, Crack a Smile. However, due to problems with the record company, this album was shelved until its 2000 release as Crack a Smile and More!.

Instead of releasing Crack a Smile, Capitol Records decided to release a Greatest Hits disc to commemorate the band’s 10 years of success. The result was Poison’s Greatest Hits 1986-1996. In addition to all their greatest hits, this album also included two new songs which were originally meant for Crack a Smile: Sexual Thing and Lay Your Body Down. Unfortunately, this album didn’t get enough of a budget for the band to release any new singles or videos. But it did go platinum.

C.C. DeVille rejoined Poison right before the release of the greatest hits collection. The band hit the road for a summer ‘99 tour, recorded the tour, and released a live album with five new studio tracks in June of 2000 called Power to the People. Soon after, a Greatest Hits DVD was released.

Lyrics:

[Sagan]
If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch
You must first invent the universe

Space is filled with a network of wormholes
You might emerge somewhere else in space
Some when-else in time

The sky calls to us
If we do not destroy ourselves
We will one day venture to the stars

A still more glorious dawn awaits
Not a sunrise, but a galaxy rise
A morning filled with 400 billion suns
The rising of the milky way

The Cosmos is full beyond measure of elegant truths
Of exquisite interrelationships
Of the awesome machinery of nature

I believe our future depends powerfully
On how well we understand this cosmos
In which we float like a mote of dust
In the morning sky

But the brain does much more than just recollect
It inter-compares, it synthesizes, it analyzes
it generates abstractions

The simplest thought like the concept of the number one
Has an elaborate logical underpinning
The brain has its own language
For testing the structure and consistency of the world

[Hawking]
For thousands of years
People have wondered about the universe
Did it stretch out forever
Or was there a limit

From the big bang to black holes
From dark matter to a possible big crunch
Our image of the universe today
Is full of strange sounding ideas

[Sagan}
How lucky we are to live in this time
The first moment in human history
When we are in fact visiting other worlds

The surface of the earth is the shore of the cosmic ocean
Recently we’ve waded a little way out
And the water seems inviting

I want to be an A&R Coordinator at a record label, soo what would be my major? music business?…?

April 192010

also what trade schools or colleges in NY teach things for future A&R Coordinators? thx much

Howdy. Well, honestly the best background for becoming an A&R person will be your own personal experience and "great ears". No school classes will make you great at that type of gig. Just about any major you can dream up in school can be helpful for a career in music later in life. The most critical thing is getting internship experience, or creating a job for yourself somehow while in school. Work with bands, intern at a label, sign up for a street team. All of these things will help you get started and will teach you all the things that a class will not teach you. And that’s coming from a former academic adviser and music business vet. Get out there on the streets and start hustlin’ and you’ll be amazed and what you can pull off.

For a list of schools that I’m beginning to review all over the country, you can check out: http://musicbusinesspage.com/music-business-degrees-and-education/

NYU is great. . .but remember, don’t limit yourself to only music programs. A good degree and experience is key.

Cheers,
Doc

Whats the main person at a major record label i want to get to hear my music?myspace.com/ecr327?

April 152010

I got a list of phones #’s to all the major record labels in the industry and i want to know if should get in contact with the A&R or CEO or someone whose going to get me a chance at getting me signed?I just don’t know which to call.. myspace.com/ecr327

Hey, the A&R department (Artists & Repertoire) are responsible for finding and developing new talent at record labels. That said cold calling tends not to be terribly effective. It’s always best to build as much of your following on your own as you possibly can.
