Christopher Rios (November 9, 1971 – February 7, 2000), better known as Big Punisher or Big Pun, was a Puerto Rican-American rapper who emerged from the underground rap scene in The Bronx in the late 1990s. He first appeared on albums from The Beatnuts on the track “Off the Books” and on Fat Joe’s second album Jealous One’s Envy, on the track “Watch Out”, prior to signing to Loud Records as a solo artist.

Sometime during the 1980s, he formed the Full a Clips Crew with Triple Seis, Prospect and Cuban Link who was at the time named “Lyrical Assassin”. At this point Big Pun was operating under the alias Big Moon Dawg. Rios met fellow Puerto Rican and Bronx rapper Fat Joe in 1995 and made his commercial debut on Joe’s second album, Jealous Ones Envy, in addition to appearing on a b-side to Joe’s “Envy” single, “Fire Water” and “Watch Out.”
Later, “I’m Not a Player” (featuring an O’Jays sample) was supported by a significant advertising campaign and became an underground hit. The song’s remix, “Still Not a Player” (featuring Joe) produced by Knobody, became Big Pun’s first major mainstream hit. His full-length debut Capital Punishment followed in 1998, and was the first album by a solo Latino rapper to go platinum, peaking at #5 on the Billboard 200. Capital Punishment was also nominated for a Grammy, but lost out on the award to Jay-Z’s Vol. 2: Hard Knock Life. He became a member of Terror Squad, a New York-based group of rappers founded by Fat Joe, with most of the roster supplied by the now-defunct Full a Clips Crew who released their debut album The Album in 1999. In 1999 he co-starred in the Albert Pyun-directed ghetto-movie Urban Menace, alongside his frequent collaborator Fat Joe.

Do you think we should re-think the way how indie and major records are distributed to stores?

May 82010

It seems Less Stores get Indie records. Yes, I do know that Most Indie labels can only produce so many records but couldn’t stores like FYE support Indie labels a tad more? If it weren’t for P2P file sharing I’d be listening to +shudder+ mainstream MUSIC!

Well, that’s the problem with indie labels as a marketing technique– the CDs they put out are not widely listened to, so a record store has to have a commitment to indie records (or a reputation as being the place to get indie records) or they aren’t going to think it’s worth their time because not as many people will buy those CDs. Which it won’t be worth their time, because they can sell 50 copies of top 40 stuff to one copy of an obscure indie group.

Besides, if FYE sold more indie records, how could indie kids feel as superior and be as pretentious? : )

Disco Music: The Real Thing – Can You Feel The Force

May 62010

The Cosmic Lounge presents Disco Music: ‘Can You Feel The Force’ by The Real Thing.

“The Real Thing, a Liverpool based vocal group, had its origins in the Merseybeat boom of the 1960s. Lead Singer Eddie Amoo was a former band member of The Chants, whose beat singles gathered considerable critical acclaim, although they failed to chart. After continuing to record for various record labels, the band name was eventually dropped.

Re-labelled as The Real Thing, and with brother Chris Amoo, Ray Lake and Dave Smith on board, they got their big break following an appearance on the “Opportunity Knocks” ITV talent show. Spotted by an ex-Radio Luxembourg DJ, Tony Hall, he played a significant part in their early career development. Even so, success was not immediate, and contracts they signed with a couple of major record labels came to nothing, before signing to Pye Records in 1975. A spell acting as backing singers on tour with David Essex, also helped to increase their profile.

With a song written and produced by Ken Gold and Mick Denne, The Real Thing finally emerged in 1976 when “You To Me Are Everything” sailed up to the Number One slot in the UK singles chart.

It led off a list of nine hits on Pye over a three year period, which included “Can’t Get By Without You”, and “Can You Feel The Force”, both of which were top five success stories.

Their brand of commercial sweet soul music, mixed with disco influences, established their popularity with the British audience. They were the UK’s best selling black group of the late 1970s, but a switch to the Calibre record label in 1980 slowed the momentum. Subsequent material fared less well, although remixes of their first two hits charted some 10 years after their original release.

The group, with three of the founder members still on board, continue to perform and record to this day

Chris Amoo is also a regular on the Dog Show circuit, the highlight coming in 1987, when his Afghan Hound, Champion Viscount Grant, was crowned Supreme Champion at Crufts.”

How do I get an address of a major record label?

May 52010

I want to know how I can send my music to Aftermath records without going through the internet?

It appears that the question period has expired. If you have received an answer that meets your needs, please choose one of those as a ‘best answer.’ If you haven’t received a good answer for your question, you may want to consider the following,

1) Re-post your question. Newer questions get more activity on Yahoo! Answers than old ones.
2) If you do re-post your question, consider why it wasn’t answered the first time. Could it be more specific? Could it be worded better? Were there grammatical or spelling errors? Was it in the best category?

If it doesn’t seem likely that re-posting your question will help you, then here’s a listing of my favorite ‘answer sites’. Maybe one of them will help you.

Bartleby http://www.bartleby.com/
Yahoo Reference http://education.yahoo.com/reference/

Since I really haven’t answered your question, it is not necessary to give me any points. Regards.

Do some musicians fail to top the charts bcos they are not signed to a major record label?

May 32010

I have noticed that artistes that top the music charts are usually signed to the major music labels like Sony,Universal,Zomba e.t.c and even really good songs by artistes signed to lesser known labels don’t do too well or even flop. Also such musicians don’t get much radio airplay of their songs but some absolute crap makes it all the way to the top.

Absolutely – That’s how Cliff Richard gets to the top … even though you haven’t heard his record played anywhere!
It’s a shame – there’s some great artists out there – but hey – MySpace and places like that are helping unknown artists … and the fact that downloads are counted now.

Big Mike “Playa”

May 32010

Michael Banks, better known by his stage name Big Mike, is an American rapper from New Orleans, Louisiana. He was originally a member of Convicts with Houston rapper Mr. 3-2. Their album would be the first of many releases Mike would put out on Houston based Rap-A-Lot Records. He made his next major appearances with the Geto Boys on the 1993 album Till Death Do Us Part. He was brought on to replace Willie D, who had left the group. However, after a dispute with Scarface over how Mike’s presence was interpreted by the fans, Big Mike was out and begun his solo career with the 1994 album Somethin’ Serious.

Are indie labels as good as major? What indie labels should I send demo’s to for acoustic/pop music?

May 12010

I have some songs up on my myspace of songs I’ve written. They are acoustic/pop style. As major record labels are almost impossible to get…what indie labels would you recommend for my kind of music.

What are the benefits of an indie label?

Cheers!

The site is: www.myspace.com/gilbertlam

I don’t think you need a label anymore in this day and age. List your completed albums on CDBaby.com. Use your self recorded songs as demos on sites like myspace.com. Maybe even join Sellaband.com and have your next album funded by your fans and other music lovers. As you gather more fans many of them will be more then helpful in furthering your career maybe put a few of them in charge of some sort of online promotions. Start your own social network at Ning for these hard core fans to interact with each other and watch as new ideas circulate to get your name out there.

Play live for people! If you can get live gigs then goto camstreams.com and set yourself up to play live online.

The tools are there for you to succeed without a label. The reason now to get a label is for promotion and marketing and you have to decide for yourself on that. Many Indie labels just don’t have the marketing muscle and that is the deciding factor.
