KOTO – Visitors (best audio)

January 312010

One of my all-time favs!

Koto is an Italian synth pop group that originally consisted of Anfrando Maiola and Stefano Cundari. Their most popular songs were “Visitors”, “Dragon’s Legend”, “Chinese Revenge” and “Jabdah”, released in 1983-1988. Koto is often associated with a genre of music called Spacesynth, a music style streamed from Space Disco. Unfortunately, it has been reported that Stefano Cundari died some time between 1991 and 1992 from a brain tumor.

Anfrando Maiola and Stefano Cundari helped to form Memory Records, an Italian record company which specialised in mainly Italo Disco releases. Koto’s “Chinese Revenge” was the first record to be released on the Memory label. It sold over 10,000 copies in Italy alone.

Both artists also helped to write, mix, and produce for a range of other artists signed to the Memory Records label, including “Challenger” and “Happy Song” for the band Baby’s Gang. Stefano Cundari is also known for his participation in the group “Hipnosis” from 1982-1987. Following their successful debut with “Chinese Revenge” both Maiola and Cundari helped remix the Vangelis track “Pulstar” for Hipnosis. Their remix of Pulstar reportedly sold over 200,000 copies worldwide.

By 1986 the mood of the record buying public was starting to change. House Music was becoming increasingly popular, and the demand for Italo Disco tracks appeared to be in decline. Memory Records, along with other Italo record companies of the time, started to suffer financially. Although attempts were made to respond to the changes by releasing House Music and Eurobeat tracks, the change was not successful and Memory Records went out of business.

In 1989, the German record label ZYX Music bought the rights to the entire Memory Records catalog, including the “Koto” name and recordings. They then brought in Dutch record producer Michiel van der Kuy to re-record and remix some of the old Koto tracks. He then released several other albums under the alias “Koto” in which he remixed science fiction movie themes and other songs, like “Koto Plays Synthesizer World Hits” and “Koto Plays Science-Fiction Movie Themes”. Michiel van der Kuy is also a member of the group Laserdance and producer for the likes of Alice DeeJay.

In recent years, Anfrando Maiola won back the rights to the “Koto” name and continues to produce music under this name. His latest tracks were: “Koto Is Still Alive” (2001) and “Blow The Whistle” (2003).

Koto was a one man project driven by Anfrando Maiola. Stefano Cundari was part of the producer team Zanni & Cundari, producing most likely all music for the record label Memory Records. Anfrando wrote the music, Zanni & Cundari produced it……

The Clan first became known to hip hop fans, and to major record labels, in 1993 (see 1993 in music) following the release of the independent single “Protect Ya Neck”, which immediately gave the group a sizable underground following. Though there was some difficulty in finding a record label that would sign Wu-Tang Clan while still allowing each member to record solo albums with other labels, Loud/RCA finally agreed, releasing their debut album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), in late 1993. This album was popular and critically-acclaimed, though it took some time to gain momentum. The success of Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers established the group as a creative and influential force in early 1990s hip hop, allowing Ol’ Dirty Bastard, GZA, RZA, Raekwon, Method Man and Ghostface Killah to negotiate solo contracts

LeAnn Rimes – How Do I Live [Official Music Video] [HQ]

January 312010

LeAnn’s 4th video. LeAnn is the original singer of this song not Trisha Yearwood. (read history below).

Writer: Diane Warren

History of How Do I Live:
“How Do I Live” is a 1997 song, written by Diane Warren, that was released originally by LeAnn Rimes, and shortly afterward by Trisha Yearwood.

The song was originally intended for release as a single for the 1997 action blockbuster Con Air soundtrack. Warren wrote the song for Rimes to sing. The producers felt that Rimes’s version had too much of a pop feeling to it, and requested that she re-record it to fit their standards. She refused, and the producers chose Trisha Yearwood to record the song. Her more country-style version was released on May 27, 1997 and appeared in the film. When Rimes heard of the release, she quickly released her version.

Despite only peaking as high as number seven in the UK Singles Chart, LeAnn Rimes’ version of How Do I Live spent thirty-four weeks in the chart. It set a record for staying on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for sixty-nine weeks. The song entered the Top 25 US Country singles chart on June 21, 1997 and was still there in February 2003, a record 291 weeks (five and half years) later.

How Do I Live was covered by F.I.R. (Faye and Real featuring LeAnn Rimes). F.I.R. invited Rimes to record a portion of the song for their third album Flight Tribe in 2006.

The song has also been performed on the hit show American Idol, Vonzell Solomon in Season 4, Paris Bennett in Season 5, and Meosha Denton in Season 2. It was also part of American Idol Season 2 compilation, sung by Carmen Rasmusen.

Rimes’ version ranks at #4 on Billboard’s All Time Top 100. The single has been certified 3x Platinum by the RIAA for shipments of over 3 million copies in the United States. On the digital front, it routinely shifts more than 1,000 units per week, for a to-date total in excess of 203,000.

Where Can I Get The Music License For A Song of Rock Band ‘Camel’ To Use On My Web Series?

January 292010

I am in the middle of creating a non-commercial Web Series on the internet and I’m looking to find out where and who holds the copyrights to the songs of a 70’s progressive rock band called ‘Camel’ from their 1976 album ‘Moonmadness’. After countless of research, I’ve learned that they released the album by the label Decca Records from the Universal Music Group (UMG) which has their own publishing group for music licensing but as I was searching, I could not find any of their songs there. I was wondering if anyone knows who really owns the song rights for this album and where can I find them for purchasing the rights for it? I’m having trouble finding who really has the rights for the songs so I can get in contact and use one of the songs for my web series. Do I request it from UMG? or Do get In contact with Camel directly for the rights? What should I do? Thank you.

You dont have to if you put a note down that you do not own the song and are not intending on copyright and all the rights belong to UMG.

Then you should be fine.

How can an independent music record label, license its music to a major record label for distribution & mkting

January 292010

First, forget going to a major label. They get tons of unsolicited material constantly which they ignore. Second, record companies contract with "Rack Jobbers" who do the actual distribution. Third, even if you had a track record of sales for your CD, most likely the majors would want to re-record the album. I can only think of two bands Dave Mason and Boston where a major actually used the artist’s original master. Fourth, majors find their own talent by sending out A&R people to scout potential acts. I could go on forever but won’t. Suggest you e-mail me direct for more info: www.passagerecording@yahoo.com

Where Can I Find VINYL Records?

January 292010

I know they are not so popular anymore, but I prefer them, and they are still made…does anyone know of super discount sites where i can find steals for Vinyl music records?

Do you mean by current artists? If they’re independent artists, go to the artists record label site, and they will usually have any available vinyl for sale there. If there’s a local independent music store in your area…independent as in not a chain store, not necessarily independent music…a lot of them sell both new & used records. For older albums, flea markets, thrift stores & garage sales are your best bet. Ebay is another great option for old and new…

Am I Penn/Georgetown/Brown capable? (International, don’t know the standards)?

January 292010

Hey there –

I’m an international tenth grader with my heart set on going to university in the US. I just wanted to know if someone could give me a rough idea if I’m in the mix to get into a Tier 1 school – right now I’m in love with Georgetown & Penn, and I’ve also toured schools like Brown which I really like.
So here’s where I’m at regarding school right now (we don’t use the GPA system so it’s a lot harder to work out where I stand):

- 1st in English & Maths; taking Extension Maths and Extension English next year (the first year you can); double Extension English in Senior Year.
- Top 10% in every other subject (our school is 9th in the state and works beyond the curriculum; so although I score around 85-90% in our internal tests, by the state standards that’s definitely higher).

Beyond academia, I have: -

- Competed at State Model UN finals,
- Member of Senior Jazz Band, Senior Concert Band, Brass Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, & Guitar Ensemble.
- Play in varsity soccer & touch football, as well as community soccer team.
- Volunteer lifeguard
- Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh awards; Gold to be completed next year (the Award involves components of volunteering, a skill, a sport, and a 3-4 day hike).
- Recently traveled alone for the first time to the US at an Ivy League summer school.
- I’m a Junior Prefect, with a strong likelihood of being a Senior Prefect and possibly House Captain, and was part of the Peer Support program.
- Consistently achieve Distinctions & High Distinctions in international academic competitions (the two highest awards).
- Selected to next year attend a young leaders conference in NY & DC, run by the UN.
- In my spare time, I’ve produced two music videos for signed artists at EMI Records (one of the Big Four). Using these skills & contacts I’m also planning a large-scale charity concert (with prominent artists) for next year.

Although I’m not first overall in my grade, I’m confident that I’m at least in the top 10%; and at the end of my senior year, my teachers predict I’ll (at least) finish in the top 5% of the state.
I’m taking the SAT’s next year.

I also write a mean essay :P

I know that no one can say definitively whether I’ll get into one of these level of schools or not, but for me, not using the GPA system nor having yet sat my SAT’s, it’s just finding out if I’m in a shot or it’s not really worth it. I’m not going to be valedictorian, but I’m hoping my outside-the-classroom interests will make up for this.

I’m also an international student able to pay the full fees, which I’ve been told helps significantly.

Any answers would be amazingly appreciated :)

Kudos!
If I were to estimate a GPA (I have absolutely no idea what it really is), I’d say it be between 3.6 – 3.8 ish, probably higher by the end of next year.
I also completed work experience at a prominent independent record label, receiving all "A’s" for it.

You appear to be a student who can get into some top schools. If you like Georgetown which is a Jesuit university, also consider applying to Boston College and Holy Cross (30 miles west of BC), both of which are also run by the Jesuits. Boston College and College of the Holy Cross share a number of similarities. Both are competitive schools, ranked among the best Northeastern colleges by the Princeton Review. Both have beautiful campuses; acres of manicured green grass and gothic architecture. And, like Georgetown, both have an esteemed Catholic background, one that is particularly attractive to students seeking a liberal arts education informed by Jesuit tradition.
HC is 2800 students and small classes. BC is 9000 students. Both are Division 1 for sports like Georgetown.
